Project Overview

The site at 301 Bank St. was formerly an unregulated junkyard and dump site for the metal recycling facility nearby. Open burning dumpsters disposing of wire insulation, and unregulated industrial use led to contaminants migrating all around the area. In 2013, some initial cleanup was done nearby.

In 2017, The NYSDEC initiated further cleanup of the City of Batavia property. The goal was to effectively remove the contaminated soil, and restore the property with clean soil. NW Contracting was contracted to perform this work, with oversight from and inspection by both NYSDEC and a third-party consultant.

The Problem

After decades of unregulated industrial dumping, contaminated soil was abundant and migrating to surrounding properties. The site was extremely heterogenous, and the samples taken identified 7 separate waste streams.

The Solution

NW Contracting was able to provide a team of experts in soil remediation to efficiently and safely excavate, transport and dispose of all contaminated soil across all waste streams. This project took place over 10 months, as more than 17,464 tons of soil and 873,200 gallons of water were removed for disposal across several treatment sites in the US. This project needed a company who understood the full spectrum of excavation and removal, and NW Contracting was the ideal partner.
