Sturgeon Point Marina needed geotechnical investigation to identify problems with and aid in the redesign of the marina breakwall. The drilling work took place over several days, and soil and rock samples were taken to characterize the soil and bedrock beneath Lake Erie.

The boring locations were inaccessible by land, so NW Contracting had to develop a solution that allowed for drilling in the water while staying on budget and remaining cost effective. The drilling would need to be done in 15’ to 20’ of water, with continuous soil samples collected. Then, rock coring to characterize the bedrock was needed.
This kind of offshore drilling required a creative solution. NW Contracting was able to use an ATV-mounted drill rig operating off of a barge to perform the necessary work in deep water. By using the barge as a drilling platform, each boring location could be reached while retaining a large work area for the drillers. Because of NW Contracting’s extensive subsurface exploration expertise, continuous soil samples and a 5’ rock run were completed at each boring to characterize the subsurface. The NW Contracting team paired their enthusiasm for problem solving with their abundance of geotechnical expertise for a creative solution that allowed a complicated job to be completed on time and under budget without cutting corners.
